Girl and Horse
Watercolor, Joe Tibbets
Displaying
a nice print or painting is to us an extension of the already sculptural
aspects of the Adobe home. As the Pueblos know, to work
in clay and sand in large scale shaping a home is but an extension
of the potter's craft where one molds the clay in a smaller scale.
And as painters of the Taos School noted in the late 1890's,
the pigments finely ground for the oxides, sepias and ochres they
painted with, could often be idenitfied in the landscapes around
them.

Adobe
colors and textures, along with that air of substantial informality,
make a great backdrop for any quality work. The
warm earth tones, when set against a deep-set window or door, framed
in Santa Fe blue or pastel green, creates a visual magic difficult
to deny. Add
to that the clarity of the Southwestern air and the strong, cast shadows,
and it's no wonder that the adobe worker may set aside building tools
in exchange for the tools of the landscape painter.
